Sarasota, FL -- The American Board of Physician Specialists (ABPS) and Medical Education Technologies, Inc. (METI.) are joining forces to better evaluate and examine physicians’ core knowledge to deal with disasters.

As the world’s largest manufacturer of medical simulation products and educational tools, METI was selected to develop a patient simulation examination that will test a physician’s ability to treat a disaster victim. METI and ABPS will create a Simulation Committee, which will help develop the examination as part of the physician’s Certification in Disaster Medicine.

Recent events have exposed a nationwide shortage of appropriately trained physicians to respond to disasters. In response, the ABPS has established a new board of certification in disaster medicine. The goal of the American Board of Disaster Medicine is to foster, coordinate, build and facilitate partnerships between disaster medicine specialists and all levels of government and the private sector. This board is creating the first physician certification examination in disaster medicine.

The joint effort will create a Simulation Committee comprised of current members of the ABDM, expert users in disaster medicine patient simulation and METI staff. METI will host face-to-face committee meetings at its headquarters in Sarasota, Florida.
